The purpose and the goal of this site can simply be stated as the following:
Investigation.
A little more descriptively – this site is about probing and enquiring into the nature of subjective experience, uncensored.
To what end?
To lead one to the source of all experiences – if there is such a thing as source.
Let me explain this bit by bit:
To elucidate the meaning of Modern, I’ll refer to the words of Carl Jung below:
(From ‘Modern man in search of a soul’. By Carl Jung)
”I must say that the man we call modern, the man who is aware of the immediate present [1], is by no means the average man. He is rather the man who stands upon a peak, or at the very edge of the world, the abyss of the future before him, above him the heavens, and below him the whole of mankind with a history that disappears in primeval mists.
The modern man – or, let us say again, the man of the immediate present – is rarely met with. There are few who live up to the name, for they must be conscious to a superlative degree. Since to be wholly of the present means to be fully conscious of one’s existence as a man, it requires the most intensive and extensive consciousness, with a minimum of unconsciousness.
It must be clearly understood that the mere fact of living in the present does not make a man modern, for in that case everyone at present alive would be so. He alone is modern who is fully conscious of the present.”
And what is mind?
Investigation into mind and what mind is – is one of the purposes of this site. Volumes can be written and have been written about what mind is. At this point however, I shall give ‘mind’ the following definition:
‘All that can be perceived and described is mind’.
Heart and Mind:
The word heart is not used here to refer to the physical organ. Instead, it is the metaphorical heart.
Whether or not there is a heart other than the mind is another matter. Qualitatively however there is a difference between the mind and the heart as it is often used in our language.
Mind is often the sensible one. It is rational, reasonable and logical faculty. It plays safe, practically and is concerned with security and survival.
Heart is not sensible. It is irrational with its own logic and reason. It does not play safe. It takes risks and is not concerned with safety, practicality, security or survival.
Mind sees differences. Heart sees commonalities. Mind divides, separates and makes things exclusive. Heart unites, brings together and is inclusive.
Mind can be two. Heart is one. Mind justifies. Heart acts without justifications. Mind judges, condemns and makes wrong. Heart forgives, accepts and embraces.
It matters little whether there are such things as Heart and Mind. It matters little if you agree or disagree about the existence of separate entities such as heart and mind.
What matters is the recognition that there are two very basic qualities within each one of us:
Fear and Fearlessness:
It is in bringing the two together that we make a whole. Fearlessness is not an absence of fear. It is acceptance, recognition and embracing of fear and uniting fear with that which is fearless in us. Fear may be considered as a function of the mind and fearlessness a function of the heart.
Fear is helpful for survival, helps and keeps us safe in the world. It helps us attain worldly goals – form and create societies, civilisations, organisations, laws and other forms. It helps us write rational and logical argument, presentation and theses – that conforms to social and cultural standards.
Fearlessness helps us discover what is true. It takes us beyond the world. It stretches our limited perspectives and takes us into the unlimited, uncharted, unknown and infinite. Fearlessness takes us into dangerous territories outside and within ourselves. Its expression is original, creative and inspirational.
It is this combination of Heart’s fearless dare and Mind’s capacity to investigate – as a Modern Man and Woman – that makes:
It is what makes you and me – at our core.
And it is in the service of this Core Truth – that pages on this site are for and about.
I invite you to browse the blog [2]and write. But more so than that, I invite you to look within, discover and embody the true Modernity and Fearlessness that is always with you.
